National Health Insurance (NHI) and Medical Insurance

📌 Overview

According to the National Health Insurance Act, foreign nationals who stay in Taiwan for more than six months are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program.

📌 Coverage for New Students

International students who arrive in Taiwan for the first time cannot enroll in NHI until their 7th month of stay.

During the first six months, students must arrange alternative medical insurance coverage.

📌 Insurance Options for the First 6 Months

Students may choose one of the following options:

1️⃣ Cathay Life Medical Insurance

  • One-time payment: NTD 3,000 for 6 months
  • Approximately NTD 500 per month (fees may be subject to change)

2️⃣ Home Country Medical Insurance

  • Must be verified by a Taiwan Embassy or Mission abroad
  • Coverage must be valid and recognized for use in Taiwan
